The authors consider the system of five matrix equations \(X_1B_1=C_1\), \(X_1B_2=C_2\), \(X_2B_3=C_3\), \(X_2B_4=C_4\), \(A_5X_1B_5+A_6X_2B_6=C_5\) over an arbitrary regular ring with identity. They give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a general solution and they express this solution when the conditions are met. As application necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a centrosymmetric solution and representation of this solution are given for the system \(XB_a=C_a\), \(XB_b=C_b\), \(A_cXB_c=C_c\) over a regular ring of characteristic \(\neq 2\). This solves an open problem formulated in \textit{Q. W. Wang, F. Qin} and \textit{C. Y. Lin} [Indian J. Pure Appl. Math. 36, No. 12, 655--672 (2005; Zbl 1104.15014)].
