The authors study the structure of the \(C^*\)-algebra generated by sequences of generalized convolutions (also called variable Toeplitz matrices). They give a full description of this algebra and derive results on the asymptotic behavior of the spectra of elements belonging to this algebra. They prove a version of Szegő's first limit theorem, the analog of the SeLegue/Szegő and Avram/Parter theorems [cf.\ \textit{Dylan B.\,SeLegue}, ``Minimal dilations of CP maps and a \(C^*\)-extension of the Szegő limit theorem'' (Dissertation, University of California at Berkeley) (1997); see also \textit{A.\,Böttcher} and \textit{B.\,Silbermann}, ``Introduction to large truncated Toeplitz matrices'' (Universitext; New York/NY:\ Springer) (1999; Zbl 0916.15012), Sections 5.4--5.7]. The structure and the strong convergence of some operators is studied in the case of the smooth generating function. Some important strong limits are computed.
