The author studies the class of generalized locally Toeplitz (GLT) sequences which he recently introduced [Linear Algebra Appl. 366, 371--402 (2003; Zbl 1028.65109)] as a generalization both of classical Toeplitz sequences and of variable coefficient differential operators. GLT analysis reveals a way for extending the classical Fourier analysis from constant coefficient one dimensional and multidimensional differential operators to the variable coefficient case by taking into account also the geometry of the domain and of the gridding of triangularization. It is known that the GLT class is stable under linear combination and products. Here it is proved that GLT class is stable under inversion also. Moreover the author takes into consideration several finite difference and finite element approximations of variable coefficient differential problems and shows how to use the GLT analysis as a generalized Fourier analysis. Therefore the paper turns out to be remarkable, even if very long indeed.
