This book is concerned with what the author calls ``anaplectic analysis''. This is something of a misnomer as the topic in question centres around, in the first instance, representations of the group \(SL(2,\mathbb R)\). In a second instance the author constructs for any pair \((N,\nu)\) with \(N\) a positive integer and \(\nu \in \mathbb Q - \mathbb Z\) with \(N(\frac \nu 2 + \frac 14) \in \mathbb Z\) a representation of the \(N\)-fold cover of \(SL(2,\mathbb R)\). The construction of these representations has certain similarities with that of the oscillator (or Weil) representation but they are fundamentally distinct. The crux of the construction of the oscillator representation is abelian harmonic analysis. In the case of the anaplectic representations it is the theory of Fourier integral operators. Like the oscillator representation the motivation is the mathematical treatment of the quantum-mechanical simple harmonic oscillator. The theory forces the author to investigate a number of delicate questions in pseudodifferential analysis and in particular those involving the composition of operators. The author then notes that the constructions he has made are closely related to the Cohen--Rankin brackets which appear in the theory of modular forms. He explicates this. What is particularly interesting is that he finds it commodious to consider modular forms, not primarily as functions on the upper half-plane but as distributions on the real plane.
