The authors study unbounded operators on a Banach space which admit smooth functional calculi, although they do not necessarily have resolvents. The main tool is the concept of hyperoperator, which is an operator-valued multiplicative distribution and can be associated with a (multi-)operator. The class of such operators is large enough, in addition being closed under the action of smooth proper mappings as well as under tensor product. The spectrum of such operators must be indirectly defined, in terms of the functional calculus. The authors also consider some related problems, such as those of invariant subspaces or of spectral decompositions.
