    Aspects of Schreier theory, particularly extensions, in more general frameworks are very worked out (Baues-Wirsching-Dreckmann-Minian, Bourn-Vitale, Breen Hoff, Rousseau,\dots) and up to date. The framework here is a protomodular category \({\mathcal C}\) (i.e., satisfying the split short five lemma) and the point of view is the obstruction. Tools are commutator theory, split extension classifier and action groupoid. Non-abelian extensions are viewed as morphisms on a groupoid \(\operatorname{Tors}{\mathcal C}\). A Schreier-McLane extension theorem gives an action on the set of extensions leading to the identification of a (groupoid) obstruction to the existence of extensions.
