Let \(G([0,1])\) be the collection of all increasing bijections from \([0,1]\) to itself. This paper studies which polynomials \(f:[0,1] \rightarrow [0,1]\) do not commute with any member of \(G([0,1])\) other than the identity map. This problem is of interest in topological dynamics because it is about characterization of polynomials with a unique self-topological conjugacy. The main result shows that if \(f:[0,1] \rightarrow [0,1]\) is a nonconstant polynomial such that \(f^2\) is not the identity map then the following items are equivalent: (1) The identity map is the only member of \(G([0,1])\) which commutes with \(f\). (2) The set of precritical points of \(f\) is dense in \([0,1]\). (3) The set of eventually periodic points of \(f\) is dense in \([0,1]\). (4) If \(K\) is any nontrivial subinterval of \([0,1]\) then \(K\), \(f(K)\), \(f^2(K), \dots\) can not be pairwise disjoint. (5) If \(C(f)\) is the set of critical points of \(f\), then \[ [C(f)] \equiv \bigcup_{c \in C(f)} \{y \in [0,1]: f^n(y)=f^m(c) {\text{ for some }} m,n \in \mathbb{N} \} \] is dense in \([0,1]\). A corollary is that every transitive or sensitive polynomial \(f:[0,1] \rightarrow [0,1]\) does not commute with any member of \(G([0,1])\) other than the identity map.
