One of the generalizations of the classical orthogonal polynomials are the so called multiple orthogonal polynomials and, in particular, the discrete multiple orthogonal polynomials [see, e.g., \textit{J. Arvesú, J. Coussement} and \textit{W. Van Assche}, J. Comput. Appl. Math. 153, No.1--2, 19--45 (2003; Zbl 1021.33006), and references therein]. In the present paper the author generalizes some previous works by \textit{W. Van Assche} [Difference equations for multiple Charlier and Meixner polynomials. Aulbach, New progress in difference equations. Proceedings of the 6th international conference on difference equations, Augsburg, Germany July 30--August 3, 2001. Boca Raton, FL: CRC Press. 549--557 (2004; Zbl 1068.33017)] and himself [\textit{D. W. Lee}, J. Korean Math. Soc. 44, No. 6, 1429--1440 (2007; Zbl 1132.33316)] for discrete multiple orthogonal of Charlier, Meixner and Hahn polynomials. For doing that the author first find a lowering operator and then give a \((r+1)\)th order difference equation by combining the lowering operator with the raising operator. Finally, some explicit third order difference equations for discrete multiple orthogonal polynomials, which was already proved by Van Assche [loc. cit.] for the multiple Charlier polynomials and the multiple Meixner polynomials, are given.
