The paper deals with Coifman type estimates for higher order commutators of singular integral operators with kernels satisfying Hörmander type conditions associated with Young functions. Following the classical arguments the authors refine the results replacing the \(L^r\) by the Orlicz space \(L^{\mathcal A}\) where \({\mathcal A}\) is a Young function. For instance they consider the maximal function \(M_{\mathcal A}f(x)=\sup_{x\in B} \| f\| _{L^{\mathcal A}(B, dx/| B| )}\) and replace the Hörmander conditions \(\int_{| x| >c| y| } | K(x-y)- K(x)| dx\leq C\) by \[ \sum_{m=1}^\infty (2^m R)^n \| K(\cdot-y)-K(\cdot)\| _{L^{\mathcal A}(\{2^mR<| x| \leq 2^{m+1}R\}, dx/(2^mR)^n)}. \] One of their main result establishes that if \(w\in A_\infty\), \(T\) is a singular integral operator with kernel \(K\), \(b\in BMO\) and some regularity conditions (Hörmander type associated to a Young function \({\mathcal B}\)) are assumed then \[ \int | T^k_b(x)| ^p w(x)dx \leq C\| b\| _{BMO}^{pk} \int M_{\mathcal A}f(x)^p w(x) dx \] where \(T_b^k\), \(k\geq 0\) stands for \(T\) if \(k=0\) and for the commutator \([b, T_b^{k-1}]\) if \(k\in {\mathbb N}\) and \({\mathcal A}\) satisfies certain relationship with \({\mathcal B}\). Also weak-type estimates and formulas for the iterated maximal function are presented. The paper contains also a number of interesting applications to vector-valued inequalities and estimates with one and two weights. In particular the authors obtain weighted norm inequalities for homogeneous singular integrals, Fourier multipliers and one-sided singular integrals.
