The authors prove a local Paley-Wiener theorem for Riemannian symmetric spaces of the compact type \(U/K\). This theorem characterizes the image under the spherical Fourier transform of the smooth \(K\)-invariant functions on \(U/K\) with support contained in a ball centered at the origin \(o=\{K\}\) and radius \(r\), where \(r>0\) is sufficiently small. Let \(\Lambda(U/K)^+\) be the set of highest restricted weights of \(K\)-spherical representations of \(U\). Then the image consists of functions on \(\Lambda(U/K)^+\) which extend as entire functions of exponential type \(r\) that decrease rapidly. The size of the support of the functions on \(U/K\) is therefore reflected in the exponent of the exponential growth of their spherical Fourier transform. The proof is based on a clever reduction to the case of a compact Lie group, where the theorem was obtained by \textit{F. B. Gonzales} [Contemp. Math. 278, 131--136 (2001; Zbl 0988.43011)].
