    This paper is concerned with the almost Mathieu operator \(H = H_{\lambda,\alpha,\theta}\) defined on \(l^{2} (\mathbb Z)\) by \[ (H u)_{n} = u_{n + 1} + u_{n - 1} + 2\lambda \cos (2 \pi [\theta + n \alpha]) u_{n}, \] where \(\lambda \neq 0\) is the coupling, \(\alpha \in \mathbb R\backslash\mathbb Q\) is the frequency, and \(\theta \in\mathbb R\) is the phase. The main result says that the integrated density of states of \(H_{\lambda,\alpha,\theta}\) is absolutely continuous if and only if \(|\lambda|\neq 1.\)
