The authors present a method to obtain a \(C^1\)-quadratic spline surface which approximates Lagrangian data and minimizes the energy functional. The Lagrangian data are represented of a set of values of a known or unknown function. The energy functional is given by the linear combination of two members: the first one measures how well the resulting surface approximates the given Lagrangian data while the second one expresses the minimal energy condition. The obtained result -- the \(C^1\)-quadratic spline surface constructed from an \(\alpha\)-triangulation over a polygonal domain and its Powell-Sabin associated subtriangulation -- can be used in many areas of computer aided geometric design for curve and surface fitting problems.
