[Part I will appear in Rev. Mat. Iberoam.; a preprint is available as Prépublication 362, Institut de Mathématiques de Jussieu, Unité Mixte de Recherche 7586, Université Paris VI et Paris VII/CNRS, \url{http://www.institut.math.jussieu.fr/}.] The paper is devoted to extensive studies of the superposition operator \(T_f:g\to f\circ g\) (the autonomous case) acting on the space \(BV_p^1(I)\) of primitives of real valued functions of bounded \(p\)-variation on an interval \(I\). First the authors formulate conditions which guarantee that \(T_f\) maps \(BV_p^1(I)\) into itself. Next they deal with questions concerning continuity, uniform continuity as well as differentiability of the Nemytskij operator in the space \(BV_p^1(I)\) and characterize such functions \(f\) for which \(T_f\) has these properties. Some partial results concern the continuity of \(T_f\) in Besov spaces \(B^S_{p,q}(\mathbb R^n)\) for \(0<s\leq 1+(1/p)\). Several open questions concerning the superposition operators acting in Besov as well as Triebel--Lizorkin spaces are also formulated.
