Let \(p\) be a prime and \(P\) a finite \(p\)-group. A fusion system on \(P\) is a category \(\mathfrak F\) whose objects are the subgroups of \(P\) such that the morphisms \(Q\to R\) in \(\mathfrak F\) are certain group homomorphisms from \(Q\) to \(R\). We omit the precise axioms here. Every finite group \(G\) with Sylow \(p\)-subgroup \(P\) defines a fusion system \({\mathfrak F}_G(P)\) on \(P\). More generally, every \(p\)-block \(b\) of \(G\) and every maximal \(b\)-subpair \((P,e)\) define a fusion system \({\mathfrak F}_{(G,b)}(P,e)\) on \(P\). The paper under review deals with the fusion system \({\mathfrak F}_{\text{Sol}}(3)\), on a Sylow 2-subgroup \(P\) of the classical group \(\text{Spin}_7(3)\). This fusion system first arose (implicitly) in work of \textit{R. Solomon} [J. Algebra 28, 182-198 (1974; Zbl 0293.20022)]. Solomon showed that \({\mathfrak F}_{\text{Sol}}(3)\) is not a fusion system of a finite group. This result is generalized here: the author shows that \({\mathfrak F}_{\text{Sol}}(3)\) is not the fusion system of a 2-block of a finite group. Her proof makes use of the classification of finite simple groups.
