    Let \(A\) be a commutative unital ring. It is shown that the semigroup ring \(A[S]\) of a finite inverse semigroup \(S\) is a cellular \(A\)-algebra in the sense of \textit{J. J. Graham} and \textit{G. I. Lehrer} [Invent. Math. 123, No. 1, 1-34 (1996; Zbl 0853.20029)] if every group ring \(A[G]\) of a maximal subgroup \(G\) of \(S\) is cellular and if a certain compatibility condition is satisfied. The cell datum for \(A[S]\) is determined, in terms of the cell data for all such \(A[G]\). The result applies in particular to the symmetric inverse monoid, to the dual symmetric inverse semigroup and to every finite aperiodic inverse semigroup.
