The author considers Hamiltonian \(S^1\) and \(S^3\)-actions on a compact symplectic manifold \(M\) containing an invariant closed submanifold \(L\). If the action on \(L\) is locally free then it is shown that the inclusion of \(L\) into \(M\) induces a trivial homomorphism \(H_i(L,\mathbb Q)\to H_i(M,\mathbb Q)\) for \(i\geq \dim L - k + 1\) where \(k = 1,3\) denotes the dimension of the group. In particular the fundamental class of \(L\) is trivial in \(M\). The same holds for the Hamiltonian action of any compact Lie group \(G\) since that contains an \(S^1\). This is an analogue of the author's similar result on free algebraic circle actions on real algebraic varieties in Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 129, 3167--3175 (2001; Zbl 1024.14025).
