Algebraic curves and surfaces \(V\) in \({\mathbb C}^n\) which satisfy the strong Phragmén-Lindelöf property are characterized in terms of their geometry. An algebraic variety \(V\) in \({\mathbb C}^n\) has such property if there exists a constant \(A \geq 1\) such that for each plurisubharmonic function \(u\) on \(V\) the estimates \[ u(z) \leq | z| + o(| z| ),\; z\in V,\; {\mathrm{and}} \; u(z) \leq 0,\; z\in V\cap{\mathbb R}^n, \] imply \[ u(z) \leq A | {\mathrm{Im}}\, z| ,\; z\in V. \] Collecting the corresponding necessary conditions the authors define algebraic surfaces in \({\mathbb C}^n\) which are called ``hyperbolic in conoids''. Using this notion it is shown that for an algebraic surface in \({\mathbb C}^n\) to satisfy the strong Phragmén-Lindelöf property it is necessary to be hyperbolic in conoids and to satisfy \(P L_{loc}(\xi)\) at each point \(\xi\) in \(V\). A number of illustrating examples are given. They show that the proposed methods are almost algorithmic.
