The authors deal with the existence, uniqueness, comparison principle and large-time behaviour of the solution of the Cauchy problem for the anisotropic porous medium equation, i.e., \[ u_t=\sum^N_{i=1} (u^{m_i})_{x_ix_i}\tag{1} \] with \(L^1\)-initial data. Here \(m_i\) are positive constants. In order to overcome the difficulty arising from the anisotropic phenomenon the authors use a specific scaling technique for each direction, so that they can construct a suitable super-solution.
