A group \(G\) is said to be locally graded if every nontrivial finitely generated subgroup of \(G\) has a nontrivial finite image. This very broad class of groups contains, among other classes, the classes of locally finite, residually finite and locally soluble groups, whilst at the same time allowing us to forget about nasty simple groups such as the Tarski monsters. In a recent paper, \textit{F. de Giovanni} and \textit{D. J. S. Robinson} [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 71, No. 3, 658-668 (2005; Zbl 1084.20026)] proved that a locally graded group that has only finitely many derived subgroups is finite-by-Abelian, thus giving yet another characterization of this latter class of groups. In the paper under review the authors obtain two generalizations of the results of de Giovanni and Robinson: -- Theorem A: If \(G\) is a locally graded group with finitely many derived subgroups of non-normal subgroups then \(G\) is finite-by-Abelian. -- Theorem B: If \(G\) is a locally graded group with finitely many derived subgroups of infinite non-normal subgroups then either \(G\) is finite-by-Abelian or \(G\) is an irreducible Chernikov group (a concept which is fully defined in the paper). Groups with every non-normal subgroup Abelian (so called metahamiltonian groups) have been studied in a series of papers by \textit{N. F. Sesekin} and \textit{G. M. Romalis} [see, for example, Mat. Zap., Sverdl. 7, No. 3, 195-199 (1970; Zbl 0324.20036)].
