The authors study the matrix multiplication operators on Banach function spaces and present some applications in semigroup theory for solving abstract Cauchy problems. One of the main results of the paper states that if \((\Omega, \Sigma, \mu)\) is a non-atomic measure space and \(M_u \in {\mathbb B}(X)\), where \(X= X({\mathbb C})\) is a Banach function space with absolutely continuous norm, then the following four assertions are equivalent: (i) \(M_u\) is invertible; (ii) \(M_u\) is Fredholm; (iii) the range of \(M_u\), \(R(M_u)\), is closed and \(\mathrm{codim} (R(M_u)) < \infty\); (iv) \(| u(x)| \geq \delta\) for \(\mu\)-a.e. \(x \in \Omega\), for some \(\delta >0\).
