The characteristic free fundamental theorems of invariant theory for the classical groups were proved by \textit{C. De Concini} and \textit{C. Procesi} [Adv. Math. 21, 330--354 (1976; Zbl 0347.20025)]. In the present paper the author shows a geometric proof for the cases of the general linear and symplectic groups, utilizing the fact that the corresponding categorical quotients are principal fiber bundles off codimension two. The Cohen-Macaulay property of the determinantal varieties involved is used as an input.
