The authors consider the system \[ \begin{cases}\partial_t u-\Delta_x u&=H_v(t,x,u,v)\cr -\partial_t v-\Delta_x v&=H_u(t,x,u,v)\end{cases}\tag{HS} \] on a smoothly bounded domain \(\Omega\subset{\mathbb R}^N\) and on \(\Omega={\mathbb R}^N\). The Hamiltonian \(H\:{\mathbb R} \times {\overline{\Omega}} \times {\mathbb R}^{2m} \to {\mathbb R}\) is \(T\)-periodic in \(t\) and satisfies \(H(t,x,0)\equiv 0\). Moreover, various growth conditions on \(H\) are allowed: \(H\) may be sub- or superquadratic, concave or convex as a function of \((u,v)\). (HS) can be written as an unbounded Hamiltonian system \[ {\mathcal I}{{d}\over{dt}}z=\nabla_z {\mathcal H}(t,z) \] on \(L^2(\Omega,{\mathbb R}^{2m})\) with \[ {\mathcal H}(t,z):=\int_\Omega(\nabla u\nabla v+H(t,x,z)dx \] for \(z=(u,v)\:\Omega\to{\mathbb R}^{2m}\). The authors prove several results on the existence of \(T\)-periodic solutions of (HS), of subharmonic solutions and on the convergence of subharmonic solutions towards a homoclinic solutions. The proofs are based on variational methods for strongly indefinite functionals.
