The author uses an algorithm based on the method of characteristics to deal with the numerical solution of a nonlinear nonlocal initial boundary value problem involving a hyperbolic integro-differential equation. It is shown that the scheme is long time stable and is optimal in order. Results from numerical experiments are presented which confirm the estimates obtained.
