The paper provides bounds for the Morse indices of certain geodesics on a surface endowed with a generic metric. Here, generic means that the result holds in a residual set with respect to the \(C^\infty\)-topology. Interesting connections with different topics, for instance the spherical space form problem, are pointed out.
