The present paper develops an algebraic setting for constructing monotone functionals of solutions to a system of ordinary differential equations which inherits the structure of the Loewner equation [see \textit{Ch. Pommerenke}, J. Reine Angew. Math., 218, 159--173 (1965; Zbl 0184.30601)] or the Loewner-Kufarev equation [\textit{P. P Kufarev}, Mat. Sb., N. Ser. 13(55), 87--118 (1943; Zbl 0061.14905)] governing subordination chains of analytic functions. The main theorem is a characterization of monotone increasing functionals of a specific type. This paper is composed of the following parts: 1. The differential equation (the matrix equation (1) \(\dot x=\int\lambda x\,d\mu_t)\). 2. A monotone device (explores the algebraic structure of this equation and gives some weighted monotone functionals of its solutions). 3. The quest for weights. 4. The case of \(A=\text{diag}(1,\dots,n)\). 5. Integer shifts of \(A=\text{diag} (1,\dots,n)\). 6. Application to power series. 7. Realizations for analytic and univalent functions. Additional aspects for sections 6 and 7 are discussed elsewhere: see \textit{A. Grinshpan}, A note on Chebyshev polynomials and finite difference wave equation (preprint) for a connection with the finite difference wave equation and \textit{A. Z. Grinshpan} and \textit{A. Grinshpan} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 133, No. 9, 2605--2608 (2005; Zbl 1072.30015)] for a note on the initial values of the de Branges weights.
