According to the Dold-Kan correspondence, there is an equivalence of categories from simplicial modules to nonnegative chain complexes given by the normalisation functor \(N\). This paper is concerned with the behaviour of commutative multiplicative structures under the inverse functor \(D\). It is shown that \(D\) sends differential graded \(E_\infty\)-algebras to simplicial \(E_\infty\)-algebras and is part of a Quillen adjunction. More generally, \(D\) maps homotopy algebras to weak homotopy algebras. Dually, the conormalisation functor from cosimplicial modules to cochain complexes also maps homotopy algebras to weak homotopy algebras. There are analogous results for coalgebra structures under normalisation and under the inverse of conormalisation.
