The propagation of a front in a two-dimensional striated medium. The evolution equation is \(V = F\), where \(V\) is the normal velocity of the front and \(F\) is a given function. Such an equation arises in flame propagation and chemical etching. The case of two space dimensions is considered with \(F(x,y) = a(x)\), where \(a\) is allowed to be discontinuous. The existence and uniqueness of a viscosity solution in the sense of Ishii is demonstrated. A monotone and consistent finite difference scheme is used for numerical approximation. The error bound is \(O(h^{1/2})\), where \(h\) is the space discretization parameter.
