Let \((M, \tau)\) be a type II\(_1\) factor. \textit{U.~Haagerup} and \textit{H.~Schultz} [``Invariant subspaces of operators in a general II\(_1\) factor'' (Preprint) (2005; http://www.imada.sdu.dk/\(\sim\)schultz/tisp.pdf)] associated to every operator \(T\) in \(M\) and every Borel set in the complex plane, a \(T\)-hyperinvariant `spectral subspace'. The present author shows that for every Borel set \(B\) in \({\mathbb C}^n\) there is a maximal closed \((T_1,\dots,T_n)\)-invariant subspace \(K\) affiliated with \(M\) such that \(\mu_{T_1| _K,\dots, T_n| _K}\) is concentrated on \(B\). The author also nicely generalizes several results of \textit{L.~G.\ Brown} [Pitman Res.\ Notes Math.\ Ser.\ 123, 1--35 (1986; Zbl 0646.46058)] concerning Brown measures of single operators to finite sets of commuting operators in \(M\) by using spectral subspaces. She proves that if \(T_1,\dots, T_n\) in \(M\) are mutually commuting operators, then there exists one and only one compactly supported Borel probability measure \(\mu_{T_1,\dots, T_n}\) on \(B({\mathbb C}^n)\) such that for all \(\alpha_1,\dots, \alpha_n\) in \({\mathbb C}\), \(\tau(\log| \alpha_1 T_1+ \dots + \alpha_n T_n - 1| )\) is the integral of \(\log| \alpha_1 z_1 + \dots + \alpha_n z_n-1| \) over \({\mathbb C}^n\) with respect to \(\mu_{T_1,\dots,T_n}\).
