Let \(\Omega\) be a bounded symmetric domain of non-tube type in \({\mathbb C}^n\) and \(S\) its Shilov boundary. Let \(P(z,u)\) be the Poisson kernel on \(\Omega\times S\). For a complex number \(s\) the authors define the Poisson transform \({\mathcal P}_s f\) on the space \({\mathcal B}(S)\) of hyperfunctions \(f\) on \(S\) by \[ ({\mathcal P}_sf)(z)=\int_S P(z,u)^s\, f(u)\, d\sigma(u). \] For \(s=1\) the Poisson transform \({\mathcal P}:={\mathcal P}_1\) maps hyperfunctions on \(S\) to harmonic functions on \(\Omega\). The authors find a necessary and sufficient condition for the functions in the image of the Poisson transform \({\mathcal P}_s\) in terms of Hua operators for all \(s\) satisfying a certain non-integral condition. When \(\Omega\) is the type \(\mathbf I\) matrix domain in \(M_{n,m}({\mathbb C})\) (\(n\leq m\)), they prove that an eigenvalue equation for the second order \(M_{n,n}\)-valued Hua operator characterizes the image.
