The authors prove strong monotonicity of the flow of finite-dimensional systems with irreducible cooperative right-hand side and with respect to arbitrary cones. Moreover, an analogue of the Poincaré-Bendixson theorem is proved for three-dimensional competitive and dissipative systems, and a generalized Smale construction is provided. Some examples illustrate the results. The historical remarks in the introduction of the paper are incomplete. Concerning the concept of cooperative functions for general cones and comparison theorems the authors cite \textit{S. Walcher} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 263, No. 2, 543--554 (2001; Zbl 1001.34008)]. In fact this concept traces back (under the name quasimonotone increasing functions) to \textit{P. Volkmann} [Math. Z. 127, 157--164 (1972; Zbl 0226.34058)]. The linear case (in the frame of generalized \(M\)-matrices) goes back to \textit{M. Schneider} [Numer. Math. 7, 11--17 (1965; Zbl 0158.28003)]. Moreover, several invariance and comparison results were obtained by \textit{P. Volkmann} [Math. Ann. 203, 201--210 (1973; Zbl 0251.34039)], \textit{R. M. Redheffer} and \textit{W. Walter} [Appl. Anal. 5, 149--161 (1975; Zbl 0353.34067)], and others. Example 2.1 of the paper deals with the Cartesian product of the two-dimensional natural cone and the three-dimensional ice cream cone. Here, at least the paper of \textit{R. J. Stern} and \textit{H. Wolkowicz} [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 12, No. 1, 160--165 (1991; Zbl 0716.15015)] should be mentioned.
