The authors show for \(N\) electrons in the field of a nucleus of atomic number \(Z\) described according to \textit{G. E. Brown} and \textit{D. G. Ravenhall}, [Proc. R. Soc. Lond., Ser. A 208, 552--559 (1951; Zbl 0044.23209)], that the HVZ theorem holds and that for \(N\leq Z\) infinitely many eigenvalues exist below the essential spectrum. The method used, is different from the one used by \textit{D. H. Jakubaßa-Amundsen} [Doc. Math., J. DMV 10, 417--445 (2005; Zbl 1075.81026)] to prove the HVZ theorem for the same model. The difficulty of the proof lies in the non-locality of the involved positive energy projections of the free Dirac operator. This is overcome by using the exponential decay of its Schwartz kernel. An error in Lemma 3 has been corrected recently.
