The paper is devoted to the evaluation of spontaneously developing shear localization within a granular body under plane strain condition, constant lateral pressure and cyclic compression-extension. The authors use the non-polar hypoplastic model of Gudehus and Bauer. The model is applied to micro-polar continuum, the micro-polar hypoplasticity. Various finite element discretizations, boundary conditions and cyclic deformations are investigated. Numerical results on monotonic and cyclic plane strain compression-extension tests are discussed for non-polar continuum (monotonous and homogeneous element deformations, cyclic and homogeneous element deformations), and for micro-polar continuum (monotoneous deformation, large cyclic deformation amplitude, small cyclic amplitude, large cyclic deformation amplitude). Finite element examples are given, and the main conclusions are based on these examples. No experimental results are given.
