A flag variety relating matrix hierarchies and Toda-type hierarchies (Q2498376)

Since [the author and \textit{A. G. Helminck}, Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci. 30, No. 3, 401--441 (1994; Zbl 0836.22029) and Acta Appl. Math. 41, No. 1--3, 99--121 (1995; Zbl 0838.22008)], the author and his collaborators have been interested in the development of a geometric framework to discuss integrable systems that are based on the introduction of flag varieties, whose structure aspects have been also progressively clarified while pursuing the program [see {the autor and \textit{A. G. Helminck}, J. Phys. A, Math. Gen. 35, No. 40, 8531--8550 (2002; Zbl 1088.22012)]. In the paper under review the author provides details in respect to the treatment within this formalism of lower-triangular Toda-type hierarchies [the author, Int. J. Differ. Equ. Appl. 8, No. 2, 151--188 (2003; Zbl 1121.37317)]. The issue is concerned with the introduction of a flag variety formed by proper classes of infinite chains of closed subspaces of the separable Hilbert space of square integrable \(\mathbb C ^k\)-valued functions on the unit circle in the complex plane, and with the linking between matrix hierarchies and Toda-type hierarchies associated with commutative subalgebras of complex \(k \times k\) matrices. The paper basically develops as follows. After recalling features of the flags and of commuting flows that have to be considered for the study, the author describes the construction of holomorphic line bundles over the flag variety and of resulting \(\tau\)-functions. Next he shows how each flag provides a solution of the Toda-type hierachy under consideration that is expressed in terms of the corresponding \(\tau\)-function.}
