A \(K\)--quasiconformal mapping \(f\) from a domain \(\Omega'\) onto a domain \(\Omega\) in \(\mathbb R^n\) has its derivative \(f'\) locally integrable to an exponent \(p = p(n, K) > n\) by a result of \textit{F. W. Gehring} [Acta Math. 130, 265--277 (1973; Zbl 0258.30021)]. For the global higher integrability the shape of \(\Omega\) plays an essential role. In [\textit{K. Astala, P. Koskela}, J. Anal. Math. 57, 203--220 (1991; Zbl 0772.30022)] it was shown that the bound \(k_{\Omega}(y, y_o) \leq C log(d(y_o, \partial \Omega )/d(y, \partial \Omega )) + C_o\), \( y \in \Omega\), for the quasihyperbolic distance \(k_{\Omega}(y, x)\) in \(\Omega\) implies a higher integrability exponent. In this paper more subtle integrability conditions, like the global integrability of \(| f'| ^n (log(e + | f'| ))^p\), are considered. The bounds for the growth of the quasihyperbolic distance are refined accordingly. The proofs make use of an estimate for the size of \(\partial \Omega\) in terms of the Minkowski content. The results are essentially sharp for \(n = 2\). In case the mapping \(f\) is quasisymmetric much weaker conditions suffice [\textit{O. Martio, J. Väisälä}, Complex Variables, Theory Appl. 9, No.4, 309--319 (1988; Zbl 0601.30024)].
