The linear inhomogeneous Cauchy problem for the generator of a semigroup on a Banach space is transformed into a homogeneous Cauchy problem for a matrix operator which is the generator of a semigroup on a suitable product space. This is done by a method developed by \textit{R.\,K.\,Miller} [Funkc.\ Ekvacioj, Ser.\ Int.\ 18, 163--193 (1975; Zbl 0326.45007)]. This way, existence and uniqueness results for the inhomogeneous Cauchy problem for Hille-Yosida operators in Favard spaces are obtained. As application, an initial-boundary value problem for hyperbolic partial differential equations is discussed.
