In this paper, \(\mathcal A\) is the operator matrix \[ {\mathcal A} = \left[ \begin{matrix} A & H \\ 0 & D\end{matrix} \right] \] with domain \(D({\mathcal A}) = D(A) \times D(D),\) where the linear operator \(A\) (resp., \(D)\) generates a strongly continuous cosine operator function in a Banach space \(X\) (resp., \(Y)\) and \(H\) is bounded from \(D(D)\) into \(X.\) The theorems proved here are on conditions on all the operators involved that guarantee that \(\mathcal A\) generates a strongly continuous cosine operator function in the product space \(X \times Y.\) The results are applied to abstract differential equations, systems of wave equations and damped wave equations.
