In the classification of smooth surfaces in \(\mathbb P^4\), an interesting special example of an irregular surface is the conic bundle \(S\) discovered by \textit{H. Abo, W. Decker} and \textit{M. Sasakura} [Math. Z. 229, No. 4, 725--741 (1998; Zbl 0954.14028)]. \(S\) arises as the degeneracy locus of two sections of a twist of a rank \(3\) bundle \(E\) on \(\mathbb P^4\), with Chern classes \(-2,4,0\). In the paper under review, the moduli space \(M\) of bundles of rank \(3\) in \(\mathbb P^4\), with the previous Chern classes, is exploited. It is proven that \(M\) contains an irreducible subset \(M'\), of dimension \(28\), whose general element is associated with conic bundle surfaces. As a consequence, it is shown that the family of conic bundles like \(S\) is irreducible, of dimension \(36\). Finally, the author constructs an explicit example of a rank \(3\) bundle which sits in \(M\) but not in \(M'\).
