The principal orbit type theorem states that if \(\alpha :G\times M\to M\) is a differentiable action of a compact Lie group \(G\) on connected differentiable manifold \(M\), then among the orbit types there is a maximal one, called the principal, such that the union of the orbits of this type is an open and dense set in \(M\). In the reviewed paper the author proves a similar statement in the case of an arbitrary Lie group. First, he gives the definitions of infinitesimal orbit types, normalizable orbits and the local tube theorem property. Next the author proves that if the local tube theorem holds at every \(x\in M\), then there is a unique maximal infinitesimal orbit type, such that the union of the orbits of this type is an open and dense set in \(M\). The last section of the reviewed paper contains some earlier results describing the non-normalizable orbits in the case of an isometric action on a Lorentz manifold.
