Nematic liquid crystals define a class of condensed matter systems of which the constituent rod-like molecules exhibit many special nonlinear phenomena. Thermotropic nematic liquid crystals are a special class of nematic cristals of which the optical properties change dramatically with the variation of the system temperature. A problem of paramount interest is to derive modelling for the transition from isotropy to the nematic phase in liquid crystals; and the aim of the paper is to study this question, using the correlation function associated with a nematic liquid crystal system which is undergoing an isotropic nematic phase transition. Various new properties are exhibited. An open problem is stated.
