Let \(G\) be a connected noncompact semisimple Lie group with finite center, \( G=KAN\) the Iwasawa decomposition of \(G\) and \(M\) the centraliser of \(A\) in \(K \). The author proves that for \(\lambda \in \mathbb{R}\backslash \{0\}\) the Poisson transform \(\mathcal{P}_{\lambda }F\) of \(F\in L^{2}(K/M)\) belongs to \( L^{2,\infty }(G/K)\). This complements an earlier result of \textit{N. Lohoué} and \textit{Th. Rychener} [J. Funct. Anal. 55, 200--219 (1984; Zbl 0556.43002)]. Using this he proves an analogue of the Tomas-Stein restriction theorem [\textit{E. M. Stein}, Harmonic analysis: Real-variable methods, orthogonality, and oscillatory integrals. With the assistance of Timothy S. Murphy. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press (1993; Zbl 0821.42001)] for Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type with real rank one. By using this estimate of the Poisson transform he also characterizes all weak \(L^{2}\) eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator of Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type with real rank one and eigenvalue \(-(\lambda ^{2}+\rho ^{2})\) for \(\lambda \in \mathbb{R} \backslash \{0\}\).
