The paper is concerned with the product formula \((fg)(A)=f(A)g(A)\) in the framework of unbounded functional calculus of sectorial operators \(A\). Given a sectorial operator \(A\) and two different functions \(f\) and \(g\) such that \(f(A)\) and \(g(A)\) can be defined by one of several different functional calculi, the authors try to make sense of the product formula \((fg)(A)=f(A) g(A)\). It is shown that, if \((fg)(A)\) is defined as a closed operator within some functional calculus and the equality \((fg)(A)=f(A) g(A)\) holds, then the product operator \(f(A)g(A)\) is closed. As corollaries, the authors obtain new product formulas for the holomorphic functional calculus, an extended Stieltjes functional calculus, and an extended Hille-Phillips functional calculus. These results generalize previous work of \textit{F. Hirsch} [Ann. Inst. Fourier 22, No.~4, 239--264 (1972; Zbl 0235.47007)], \textit{C. Martinez} and \textit{M. Sanz} [Potential Anal. 9, No.~4, 301--319 (1998; Zbl 0927.47011)], and \textit{R. L. Schilling} [J. Aust. Math. Soc., Ser.~A 64, No.~3, 368--396 (1998; Zbl 0920.47039)].
