\textit{S. Koenig} and \textit{B. Zhu} [Math. Z. 258, No. 1, 143--160 (2008; Zbl 1133.18005)] showed that the quotient of a triangulated \(\Hom\)-finite Krull-Schmidt \(k\)-category for a field \(k\) by a cluster-tilting subcategory is abelian. In the paper under review, the case of an abelian quotient \(\mathcal A\) of a triangulated \(\mathcal T\) category by an ideal \(\mathcal I\) is studied systematically. First, it is shown that if \(\mathcal A\) has only finitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable objects, then \(\mathcal A\) has a progenerator. If \(\mathcal A\) has a progenerator and if the projection functor \(\pi\) from \(\mathcal T\) to \(\mathcal A\) is cohomological, then \(\pi\) is shown to be representable with an explicitly constructed representing object \(T\). Further, the authors show that under two technical assumptions the functor is full and dense. Finally the question of the Auslander-Reiten structure of \(\mathcal A\) is studied in case \(\mathcal T\) has AR-triangles. In a last section the case of cluster tilting objects and \(2\)-Calabi-Yau situations are studied, and a link to the above mentioned paper of König and Zhou is given.
