The authors present an algebraic approach to the study of the relation between Lie algebroids and cohomology operators, based on the Frölicher-Nijenhuis calculus. They describe a class of Lie algebroids arising from an idempotent endomorphism with nontrivial Nijenhuis torsion, and they construct new examples of Lie algebroids canonically associated to a generalized foliation, and to complex, product and tangent manifolds.
