Self-joinings of higher order are investigated. This is closely related to Rohlin's problem on multiple mixing. If an automorphism \(S\) of the space \((X,{\mathcal B},\mu ),~\mu (X)=1\), commutes with the action \(\{T_g :g\in G\}\), then the measure \(\Delta_S \), defined by the rule \(\Delta_S (A\times B)=\mu (SA\cap B)\), is self-joining of order 2. An action \(\{ T_g \}\) is said to be \(2\)-simple if any ergodic self-joining of order 2 either is of the form \(\Delta_S \) or coincides with the measure \(\mu\times\mu\). Main results of the paper: 1) An uncountable 2-simple action is mixing of arbitrary multiplicity. 2) Every mixing action (including noncommutative ones) commuting with an action \(\{T_g \}\) of this kind has multiple mixing of arbitrary multiplicity.
