The author studies the following problem (raised by Borut Zalar): Does a Jordan *-derivation on a semisimple Banach *-algebra have a dense range? The author showed that, if \(A\neq(0)\) is a complex commutative semisimple Hermitian Banach *-algebra, then the range of a Jordan *-derivation on \(A\) cannot be dense. On the other hand, let \(C_p(A)\) be the \(p\)-class of a semisimple \(H^*\)-algebra \(A\) \((1\leq p<\infty)\), it is proved that there is a Jordan *-derivation on \(C_p(A)\) with dense range if and only if the minimal closed ideals on \(A\) are infinite-dimensional. A similar statement holds for \(C(A)\). Since \(C(A)\) is a \(B^*\)-algebra, this also shows that Jordan *-derivations with dense range on some \(B^*\)-algebras do exist.
