An \(n\times n\) matrix function \(W\) that is analytic at \(\infty\) with \(W(\infty)=I\) has a realization in the form \(W(\lambda)=I+C(\lambda I-A)^{-1}B\), where \(A\), \(B\), and \(C\) are \(m\times m\), \(m\times n\), and \(n\times m\) matrices, respectively. A realization is called minimal if \(m\) is the smallest possible integer such that \(W\) admits a realization. \(W\) is said to be companion based if it admits a minimal realization where \(A\) and \(A-BC\) are first companion matrices. The authors investigate companion based matrix functions, the minimal factorization of companion based rational matrix functions, and they discuss some algorithmic aspects related to the construction of minimal and, in particular, complete factorizations of companion based matrix functions.
