Stiff differential equations are characterized by geometric properties of the flow -- existence of a strongly attractive, smooth, invariant manifold. The aim of the authors is to prove convergence of one-step discretizations without making any further structural assumptions on the problem (such as one-sided Lipschitz conditions, or singular perturbation form). The basic ideas of a convergence analysis are introduced and illustrated at a simplified situation (the implicit Euler method is considered and it is assumed that the problem has only one stiff eigenvalue). A series of forthcoming papers are announced where more general situations will be treated.
