A family of models for the interaction of a tumor are set up in mathematical terms. Such a model can be transformed to a system of ordinary differential equations. Emphasis is on the basic strategy of mathematical modeling, and suggestions are made how the models might be evaluated and improved. An application to optimal treatment in immunotherapy is considered. Constant, periodic and impulsive therapies are investigated. A number of simulations under different conditions are presented and the existence of tumor-free equilibria is discussed. These results may be of interest for planning the schedules of the therapies.
