In combinatorial or geometric group theory, there are two fundamental constructions, namely those of a free product with amalgamations and HNN extensions [\textit{G. Higman, B. H. Neumann} and \textit{H. Neumann}, J. Lond. Math. Soc. 24, 247--254 (1950; Zbl 0034.30101)]. In the framework of von Neumann algebras (as well as \(C^*\)-algebras), reduced free products with amalgamations have been seriously investigated so far and played key roles in several resolutions of ``existence'' questions in the theory of von Neumann algebras. However, HNN extensions have never been discussed so far in this framework. The main aim of the present paper is to introduce reduced HNN extensions of von Neumann algebras and \(C^*\)-algebras and to discuss their modular theory, factoriality and ultraproducts. In several concrete settings, a detailed analysis of them is also carried out.
