An operator \(T\) on a Banach space \(E\) is a Riesz operator (quasicompact, resp.) if the essential spectral radius is equal to zero (smaller than \(1\), resp.). It is well-known that the implications (*) ``compact \(\Rightarrow \) power compact \(\Rightarrow \) Riesz \(\Rightarrow \) quasicompact'' hold. Let \(B \) be a unital commutative semi-simple Banachalgebra and \(T:B\rightarrow B\) an endomorphism, i.e., a linear operator with \(T\left( 1\right) =1\) which preserves multiplication. It is shown that for a quasicompact endomorphism \( T\;\)on a Banach algebra with connected maximal ideal space the iterates \( T^{n}\), \(n\in {\mathbb N} ,\) converge in the operator norm to a rank-one endomorphism. Moreover, the question is investigated whether some of the properties in (*) coincide for an endomorphism. For the Banach algebra \(C^{1}\left[ 0,1\right],\) the authors show that the implications in (*) are strict. For a certain subclass of the Dales-Davie algebras, it is shown that every quasicompact endomorphism induced by an analytic selfmap is power compact. Every quasicompact endomorphism on the disk algebra or the Hardy space \(H^{\infty }\left( \Delta \right) \) of the unit disk \(\Delta \) is power compact. On the other hand, there exists a uniform algebra \(B\) with connected maximal ideal space and a Riesz endomorphism on \(B\) which is not power compact.
